Private First Class Kyle Farr braved the cool Gig Harbor waterfront morning and laced up his running shoes Sunday for a special race. Also, a 68-year old Kyle Farr, salved up his arthritic knees to join his community for the worthwhile event. Gig Harbor — Two days before the inaugural Race for a Soldier Half Marathon, race founder Leslie Mayne had a message. But she let others tell it.

Over a span of nearly two decades, Shannon Swords has recorded about 50,000 miles on foot. On the map it’s about two laps around the world. In shoes it’s about five pairs a year. Beginning in 1994 the distance runner recorded every mile he ever ran and now has an entire shelf full of running journals.

WASHINGTON — The 27th annual Army Ten-Miler brought 30,000 registered runners, including 701 teams, from around the world Sunday to compete in one of the largest 10-mile races in the world.

She knows because her husband, Jameel Shamsid-Deen is deployed to Afghanistan, one year after he returned from a previous deployment. And while running a business and raising three children on her own, including a 9-month-old, sometimes she just needs to relieve some stress.

For nearly two decades Bill Miller has lobbied for a complete overhaul of Kimbro Pool. It’s been a long-time project for the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Aquatics Coordinator and the timing is finally right for it to happen.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio — The 2011 U.S. Air Force Marathon broke a number of records this year — first selling out earlier than ever in June and then by lining up 13,000 runners at the starting line on the grounds of Wright State University and the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio.
