It’s going to be a rematch of last year’s women’s intramural soccer championships as the Warriors secured a spot to play in the finals with a 4-1 smothering of United Football Club Monday at Cowan Stadium.
The Warriors, last year’s champions, are looking to face this year’s regular-season champions, the Hot Shots. The Hot Shots beat the Warriors to remain undefeated in the regular season and gave the Warriors team its only loss.
The loss forced the Warriors to take the hard road through the losers’ bracket while the Hot Shots gained an automatic bid in the finals. The Warriors are looking forward to giving the Hot Shot a dose of their own medicine and, for the second time, winning the final game.
The Warriors put the hurt on United after the break, scoring three times, with the first goal at the 2:05 mark of the second half.
Less than five minutes later, Warriors captain Anjee Brooks’s goal led her team to a comfortable 3-0 advantage.
United found some solace two minutes later as forward Taelene Trujillo ended the shutout by footing in a pass off a free kick. But, any thoughts of a United comeback were quelled by another Warriors goal in to return the gap to three goals.
“We just focused on passing today and it worked out,” Warriors keeper Andrea Quezada said.
She voiced her optimism about next week’s showdown against the Hot Shots.
“We’re going to pass it around all day long next week,” Quezada said, “We’re going to kick their tails.”
The Warriors won almost every major statistical category against United. The Warriors possession was steady at 62 percent overall and the Warriors had more chances to score, too, with 15 more shots by night’s end. One interesting note, the Warriors did not take a goal kick the entire game.
Trujillo looked at the positive side.
“We’re losing a lot of players (next year) so it was great to play with everybody,” she said.
