Dave Minnis, a staff sergeant with Group Support Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis, was named last week to the 2009 Greater Northwest Football Association all-region first team.
Minnis, a 5-foot-9-inch, 195-pound running back with the semi-pro South Sound Shockers of Lacey, had already been chosen to the Washington Football League all-star first team at that position. The 24 year old ran for 896 yards and 11 touchdowns this year for South Sound, which finished 7-3. He became the team’s all-time leading rushing leader.
Minnis was one of a number of Fort Lewis Soldiers on this year’s Sound Sound roster.
“The thing that stood out the most about Dave is his toughness,” said Steve Matychowiak, South Sound’s head coach.
“He has always been a quiet leader, choosing to lead by example rather than vocally.”
Matychowiak called Minnis “an outstanding person. Because of his commitment to lead and his do-whatever-it-takes attitude, he was named as a team captain for the 2009 season. Versatility, an uncommon effort level and an inner toughness made David a very deserving pick for first team all region.”
Shockers’ defensive end Ron Strozyk was named GNFA defensive player of the year after becoming the team’s all-time sacks leader with 25. He and South Sound middle linebacker Nathan Enciso were unanimous selections to the all-region first team.
Junior Auseuga, a guard for the Shockers, joined Minnis on the GNFA offensive first team.
South Sound also placed players on the all-region second team and among honorable mention picks.
The Shockers are currently holding off-season workouts. Prospective players and assistant coaches should call Matychowiak at (360) 534-0439.
