U.S. Army Soldier Show
The U.S. Army Soldier Show returns to Fort Lewis Aug. 28 in the Carey Theater. There are two show times for this free event: 2 and 7 p.m. The show is a high-energy, live musical revue showcasing the talents of active-duty Soldiers who are selected by audition from throughout the Army. This year’s variety show will have audience members feeling as though they are in a live television studio.

Team Lewis Back to School

K-8 online program
Clover Park School District has partnered with Federal Way School District’s Internet Academy to offer online learning to kindergarteners through eighth-graders living on Fort Lewis.
Parents can register students starting Monday. Registration packets for the Clover Park Online Program may be obtained on the district’s Web site (www.cloverpark.k12.wa.us) or picked up in Room 12 at Clover Park School District’s Student Services Center (10903 Gravelly Lake Drive SW in Lakewood). Registration packets can also be mailed by calling 583-5390.
Welcome information from the Internet Academy will be e-mailed to students and parents starting Sept. 1. Students will complete the bulk of their work from home, but will receive eight hours each week of “face time” with an online coordinator. Specific schedules (dates and times for on-site contact) will be communicated to the parents following completion of the enrollment process.

IT Expo
The 12th Annual Information Technology Expo will take place at the American Lake Community center Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The event will feature displays and demonstrations of the latest advancements in the field from today’s leading IT vendors. Update your DOD sources for current and future projects and requirements. There is no fee to attend. All Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base personnel are invited.

All-City Tailgate
Harry E. Lang Stadium (6615 111th St SW, Lakewood) is the place to be Sept. 11 when Clover Park School District hosts its fifth annual All-City Tailgate Event, designed to celebrate the beginning of a new school year, acknowledge the cooperative relationships the district has with local partners, showcase students and school programs and have fun.
All Lakewood, Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base community members are invited to attend. Festivities will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., prior to Lakes High School’s football game against Peninsula.
A variety of entertainment and activities will be part of the event, including $1 hot dog meals — while supplies last. Participants are encouraged to wear their school colors.

Clarkmoor Hourly Care Center
Clarkmoor Hourly Care Center is located at Building 2094 on Bitar Ave. All families registered with CYSS may use the facility on a space-available basis. Child care reservations can be made two weeks in advance. The staff provides quality hourly child care for children six weeks to six years old (kindergarten) and may use Army Family Covenant respite care hours.
Clarkmoor Hourly Center hours:

● Tuesday — Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
● Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

New patrons are offered the initial first hour of child care free. There is a minimum reservation of two hours. Clarkmoor Hourly Care Center also offers an early-bird special through Oct. 31. Cost is 50 percent off from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. with a minimum two-hour reservation.
To use the facility, families must complete a free registration at the CYSS Central Registration, Building 2295 at 12th and Bitar. Call 967-2494 to make a registration appointment.

GI Bill information
There will be two information sessions to explain the ins and outs of the new Post 9/11 GI Bill, including transferability to family members. The sessions will be presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Stone Education Center.
The first session will be Tuesday, from 3 to 5 p.m.; the second will be Aug. 31, from 10 to 11 a.m. Both sessions will be held in the Stone Education Center Auditorium.

Walk For Life
Take a public and supportive stance, be proactive in suicide prevention, not reactive, by taking part in the annual Walk For Life, Sept. 9. The walk starts at 7 a.m. at Four Chaplains Memorial Chapel. Participants will walk across Fort Lewis to the Main Post Chapel to raise awareness about the tragic problem of suicide in our community.
Soldiers, DA civilians, contractors, family members, retirees — everyone in the Fort Lewis family — are welcome to participate. There will be a 6:30 a.m. PT warm-up and a 6:50 a.m. message before the start of the walk.
Help build a suicide-safer community for all. Learn what you can do to save a life. Call your local chaplain to learn more about what you can do for those at risk to suicide. Show you care; get involved; get help.
Seattle Seahawks ticket sales
Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. at the American Lake Community Center, for 2009 Seattle Seahawks regular-season tickets. Only active-duty service members and their spouses are eligible to purchase Seahawks tickets.
A maximum of eight tickets per person may be purchased. Individuals must be present to purchase tickets. Tickets may be purchased for a mix of games.
Prices are $80 for lower-level seats and $60 for upper-level seats. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Overnight camping at American Lake Community Center is not authorized.

Fall bowling leagues

Fall SKIES registration
SKIES Unlimited stands for Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills. It is an Army program that offers instructional programming in academics, arts, life skills and sports for children ranging in age from infants through teens.

Basketball camp
Registration for Craig Hodges’ basketball camp runs through Monday. This camp is free for children of deployed Soldiers; the cost is $80 for others. Craig Hodges, an assistant coach for the L.A. Lakers, has won three NBA championships.
The camp will be Monday to 21 at the Youth Center Teen Zone Gymnasium. Ages 5 to 10 will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. and ages 11 to 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The American Red Cross on Fort Lewis/McChord/MAMC is conducting a Volunteer “Needs” Assessment. Their mission is to seek new volunteer opportunities for their Volunteer Staff.

Operation Rising Star The Operation Rising Star local competition will continue at American Lake Community Center Wednesday and Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. The audience will vote for their favorite contestants and win prizes, too.
The most-supportive unit or family readiness group will receive $300.
The installation competition is to claim $850 in cash prizes and a chance to advance to the televised finals. Singers must be active duty, Reserve, National Guard or military family members 18 and older.
The All-Army grand prize winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two, vocal coaching, professional arrangements and sound engineering for a three-song demo CD; 2nd place – $1,000; 3rd place – $500.

Waiting Families Support Group
The Waiting Families Support Group is open to family members of active-duty Soldiers on unaccompanied tours or extended TDY. It is a place to exchange ideas on how to cope with unique problems faced during a sponsor’s absence and have some light-hearted fun.
WFSG offers help in many ways. It provides information on community events and ACS programs. It offers short-term crisis intervention services; and when needed, acts as a liaison with military and civilian agencies.
WFSG also addresses practical aspects of separation and relocation. Children are welcome.
WFSG meets the first Wednesday of each month at Waller Hall, ACS Room 400, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information call 967-3633.

Got Health?
Lewis-McChord Communities are partnering with the Fort Lewis/Madigan Army Medical Center Department of Preventive Medicine Community Education Team in support of a new health promotion program, “Got Health? The Choice is Yours!” Starting in August, subject-matter experts will visit neighborhood community centers to offer a series of healthy living classes, including community resources for healthy living, stress management, portion distortion and financial planning.
Meet your neighbors, increase your knowledge about basic nutrition and disease prevention and learn all that Fort Lewis has to offer for living a healthier and happier life.

An ACS Relocation Readiness presentation Aug. 21 will help you conquer your fear of public speaking. The presentation will be in Stone Education Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you occasionally “um” and “ah,” this free seminar is just what you need to ease your nerves and start speaking like a seasoned pro. You’ll learn to turn nervousness into energy and use your voice to establish sincerity, credibility and confidence.
This presentation is open to the entire Fort Lewis community; however, priority will be given to Relocation Assistance committee members, Newcomers’ Orientation presenters and ACS staff.

Poster contest
The Office of Suicide Prevention is currently accepting submissions for the 2010 Suicide Prevention Poster Contest. Posters should be creative and employ specific suicide-awareness messages. Posters are required to be 8 x 12 inches and may be submitted by individuals or teams of up to five members. The winning poster, chosen in early September, will be the lead display for 2010 Suicide Prevention efforts.

Registration for all ages is ongoing for “Walk to Iraq.” Track your fitness improvement while you “Walk to Iraq” until your Soldiers return. “Walk to Iraq” meets Mondays and Wednesdays.
