Thefts rising on post
According to Lt. Col. Ted Solonar, Fort Lewis provost marshal, there has been an increase in thefts of personal property. Most significant are thefts of property from privately owned vehicles. The common factor in nearly all of these incidents was that the car was left unlocked, making it easy for the thieves to quickly steal items left in the car.
Unsecured personal property is the single most common reason for theft on Fort Lewis.
“The best way you can protect yourself from becoming a victim is to lock up your property,” Solonar said.
Home, barracks and car doors should be kept locked. Valuable items should not be left in plain sight. Items such as GPS trackers, MP3 players, wallets and purses are best not left in cars. If you must leave them in the car, put them in the glove box, console or trunk. In the barracks, place valuables in a locked box or locked drawer when you leave the room.
“If everyone on Fort Lewis locked up their things, we could cut thefts by more than 50 percent, almost overnight,” Solonar said.
For more information, contact April Cook, Fort Lewis crime prevention officer, at 966-8909.

Since the OSC reserves the right to refuse items deemed inappropriate for sale at this bazaar, photographs, a brief explanation of the item(s) being sold and a price list are helpful.
