Extreme Mountain Bike Race
Join Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports at Soldiers Field House March 27 at 9 a.m. for the Extreme Mountain Bike Race. There will be three categories of races: recreational, for the first-time rider who wants a more relaxed race (one lap on the 7.5K course); beginner, which is designed for the entry-level rider (two laps on the 7.5K course); and sport, which reflects improved skills and developed strength and stamina (four laps on the 7.5K course). Early registration deadline is March 17. Active military, military family members and military retirees are $5; DOD government employees are $10; other civilians are $20. Late registration deadline is March 24 — add $10 to the registration fee after March 17.

Whale watching
It's time for a Pacific Coast spring tradition; the California gray whales are beginning their migration to their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic, and you can enjoy watching them as they swim past. Outdoor Recreation will take you on a whale-watching trip March 28. Cost of the trip is $50 for adults, $40 for ages 5 to 14 and free for those 4 and younger. Preregistration is required. Ice skating
Are you inspired by watching the Olympics? You, too, can get out on the ice with Outdoor Recreation’s fun trips to the nearby Sprinker Rec Center’s skating rink, today and March 21. Survival training
Hone your skills and learn to deal with whatever the Northwest outdoors throws at you, by attending Northwest Adventure Center’s survival-skills clinic Saturday. Learn how to find shelter in the rain forest, to build a fire and more, and leave with your own mini survival kit. Cost of the four-hour class is $25. Preregistration is required. Hunter safety education course
Learn to safely handle hunting equipment, the importance of wildlife management and much more in Outdoor Recreation’s hunter safety education course April 12 to 17.
Cost of the class is $10. This course is mandatory to hunt in the state of Washington. Class runs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., and begins at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Cross country ski Lake Keechelus
Spend a great day in the snow-filled Cascades cross country skiing along Lake Keechelus near Snoqualmie Pass on March 20. The groomed trails make it an excellent place for skiers of all abilities. Cost of the trip is $30; gear, transportation and instruction are provided. Meet at the NAC at 9:30 a.m.

McMinnville Wine and Food Classic
Head to the 17th Annual McMinnville Wine and Food Classic at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinneville, Ore., on Saturday. Enjoy gourmet food, guest chef demonstrations, arts and crafts, live music and wine tasting from some of the best wineries and vineyards in Oregon. Cost of this Outdoor Recreation trip is $50, which includes transportation and event admission.

Bella Donna winter survival
Women, sign up today for Outdoor Recreation’s Bella Donna Winter Survival Class, Saturday. This class covers the basics, such as shelter and fire craft, as well as snow shelters and winter-specific concerns. Cost of the class is $35. You will leave with a starter survival kit, and we provide all the transportation and instruction. Minimum age: 12. Meet at the NAC at 9:30 a.m. Dress for snow conditions.

Indoor rock climbing
Head to Warehouse Rock Gym in Olympia March 21, for an afternoon of climbing. Cost of the trip is $20 — $18 for ages 17 and younger — which covers gear and transportation. No experience is necessary. Meet at the Northwest Adventure Center at noon.

Introduction to mountain biking
Join Outdoor Recreation for a fun guided instructional ride for beginners March 27 or April 3. Spend the day learning the basics, while getting plenty of time to work on your new-found skills. Cost of the trip is $25; bike, helmet, gloves and transportation are included. The location of the ride will be determined based on current conditions.

Grand prix racing
Have a fast time on the track at the Grand Prix Raceway Track in Tacoma, April 15. Cost of the trip is $30, which includes transportation to the track, lap fee, cart, helmet and head sock. Thrill to the wheel-to-wheel action on the nearly four miles of track.
