Gates and roadwork progress on JBLM

There will be a new street light and pedestrian crossing installed from June 6 to July 9 at the intersection of 41st Division Drive and Stryker Avenue.

Stryker Avenue will be closed from 41st Division Drive to just short of 14th Street. Motorists are advised to get on Stryker Avenue. from 41st Street heading south, take a left on Mann Street and another left on 14th Street. Detours will be in place to direct traffic.

The repairs to 4th Division Drive (beginning at the intersection of East Gate Road and 4th Division Drive) will require the section of roadway from STA 0+00 to STA 42+00 to be closed and traffic rerouted via detour. Traffic entering from the East Gate will be directed to follow East Gate Road to 2nd Division Drive. A right turn on 2nd Division Drive will lead traffic to a right turn onto the paved combat trail that constitutes the detour route and will allow access to 4th Division Drive.

Traffic traveling south on 4th Division Drive will use the same route in the opposite direction.

Railroad Avenue continues to be closed now through June 24 for the I Corps mission rehearsal exercise. Traffic should bypass the Battle Command Training Center until that part of Railroad Avenue reopens June 25.

Other new traffic considerations follow:

Additional traffic control will be required for short duration single lane closures along East Gate Road to allow for a safe work zone at the intersection of 4th Division and East Gate Road.

During tree falling operations along 4th Division, short duration closures will be required.

No physical training/construction area signage will be posted along the work zone. Access to ranges along the work zone will be available from approximately STA 44+50.

Access to the combat vehicle wash area will be via the combat vehicle trail. The D Street Gate on JBLM Lewis North: The next East Drive project plans repairs starting at the end of the D-Street widening to DuPont/Steilacoom Road requiring road closure, likely in July.

Drivers using Jackson Avenue near Madigan Army Medical Center should expect delays for a few months as contractors begin repairing a one-mile stretch of road from the barricades near the Madigan Gate to Transmission Line Road. The project is scheduled for completion in August.

Triple threat triathlon

JBLM Sports and Fitness presents the 19th annual Triple Threat Triathlon Series June 18, July 16 and Aug. 20. Swim, bike and run your way to glory as you compete for the coveted “triple threat crown.” The series consists of a 250- or 800-yard swim, 15-mile bike and 3-mile run at Shoreline Park on American Lake and on trails at Lewis North.

Army birthday bash

Each of the child development centers, school age centers and youth centers in CYSS will celebrate the Army’s birthday Tuesday.

An honored guest will read an Army Birthday storybook to the children and each site will have a special cake decorated with the American flag to share with parents and children.

The programs have also planned curriculum activities related to the Army for enrolled children and their parents.

Soul food feast

Feast on soul food at the National Soul Food Month celebration at the American Lake Community Center June 23. The buffet is 5 to 8 p.m. and costs $15.95 for adults, $6.95 for ages 4-10 and free for ages 3 and younger.

Entrees include barbecued pork ribs, fried chicken and catfish, and southern-style side dishes and desserts.

Healing horses retreat

The Northwest Horsemanship Center in Fall City, Wash., is hosting a creative retreat for military families June 24 through 26, in cooperation with the Warrior Transition Battalion, Soldier Family Assistance Center and Military Family Life Consultant program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The center offers free equine-assisted therapy. A successful program a year ago focused on returning warriors.

This year’s program spotlights Families of returning warriors to help rebuild partnerships between spouses, reestablish family bonds and help the children express their feelings about their warrior parents’ deployment. Meet a team of professional therapists, American Legion volunteers and professional equestrian instructors. There is no cost to the Families . Advance reservations are required and space is limited. Golf tournament

The Military Order of the Purple Heart is hosting its annual golf tournament June 25. This event will be held at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course with two tee times — 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. Registration deadline is June 18.

Lunch is complimentary and prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, straightest drive, closest to the pin and hole in one.

Sound to Narrows

The Intramural Sports Office has organized military unit-level participation and formation running in the 2011 Sound to Narrows Race Saturday in Tacoma.

The deadline for entry has passed, however units may still pick up Sound to Narrows memorandums of instruction at any JBLM fitness center or online at JBLMmwr.com under Race Calendar.

To participate, units and team representatives should have attended the prerace meeting Tuesday.

Army birthday ball

Joint Base Lewis-McChord and I Corps will celebrate the 236th birthday of the U.S. Army and the Profession of Arms Thursday, 6 p.m. at the Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. A social hour is from 5 to 6 p.m.

Tickets are available for purchase from the I Corps Protocol Office or through brigade sergeants major. The price of the tickets is $40 per person with a choice of chicken or beef entrees.

At the ball the 2011 JBLM NCO/Soldier of the Year, as well as the 1st Sgt. Ordway winner will be introduced. For tickets or more information contact Master Sgt. Matthew Conway at 477-1153.

Golf in Rainier Cup Join an Army or Air Force golf team to compete in the 2011 Rainier Cup 54-hole team match play over three courses.

Play begins at Whidbey June 24, continues at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Lewis June 25, and finishes at JBLM-McChord Field June 26.

The $115 per golfer entry fee includes three rounds of golf, team uniform, range balls, daily KPs, Friday and Saturday meal and Sunday awards banquet.

Team Army and Team Air Force are open to active duty and family members, Reserve and family members, Coast Guard, DOD civilians and military retirees.

Each golfer must have current USGA handicap. Army golfers, check with Eagles Pride Golf Course for team info at 967-6522. Air Force golfers, check with Whispering Firs Golf Course for team info at 982-4927.

Kids learn golf for $99

Juniors can learn golf the easy way with Golf 4 Kids at Whispering Firs Golf Course at McChord Field. Group lessons cost only $99 per person for weekday instructions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Lessons are taught by the student-centered Life Master LPGA resident professional.

The first group session meets June 27 to 30 for ages 8 to 10. The next session meets July 11 to 14 for ages 1 to 13. Call the pro shop at 982-4927 for sign-up information.

Rugby signups

JBLM Lewis-Main rugby team looking for new and experienced players for this summer’s 7s season. No experience needed, we’ll train new and inexperienced players.

McChord art show

Adults are invited to bring in their creative works June 27 to July 3 for an art exhibit July 5 to 19 at the McChord Library. The arts and crafts will be on display for the “Midsummer Knight’s Read” summer reading program. Smaller and more delicate works will be placed in a display cabinet.

JBLM Diversity Day The I Corps Equal Opportunity Staff Office is looking for volunteers to assist with the first annual Joint Base Lewis-McChord Diversity Day observance to take place June 21 at the American Lake Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Seattle Mariners join in celebrating the Army’s 236th birthday with a special event June 17, U.S. Army Night at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Ten Miler tryouts

Army active duty personnel tryouts for the formation of the JBLM Army Ten-Miler Team are planned for June 25 at 8 a.m. at Sheridan Sports and Fitness Center, Building 3759. Those selected will compete in the Army Ten Miler Oct. 9 in Washington, D.C.
