Gates and roadwork progress on JBLM

Jackson Ave will be closed for road work between Gardner Loop Drive and Transmission Road now through Aug. 15. The closure will be effective from 6 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Staff, medical personnel and visitors to Madigan Army Medical Center will be allowed access via the Madigan Gate/Jackson Ave/Gardner Loop Road or Hillside Drive/Blaine/5th Street .

During night work closures, inbound traffic from Exit 122 through Madigan Gate will not be allowed travel on Jackson Avenue beyond Gardner Loop Drive. From Madigan Gate to Gardner Loop Drive, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Access to the AAFES will remain open, but no left turns will be allowed upon through the work area.

During construction hours, DOD employees working at the Logistics Center and residents of Madigan housing can exit by getting on East Lincoln Drive, left on Transmission Intercept, right on Transmission Line Road, left on Jackson Ave., right on Hillside Drive, right on Blaine Avenue, right on Fifth Avenue, left on Gardner loop and left on Jackson and out the Madigan Gate.

Access to MAMC from Joint Base Garrison will be accomplished with a detour onto Hillside Drive, to Blaine Ave, to Fifth Street to Gardner Loop Drive. Local access on Jackson Avenue between Hillside Drive and Transmission Line Road will be allowed. No traffic will be allowed on Jackson Avenue beyond Transmission Line Rd.

During the hours of 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during weekends, Jackson Avenue will be fully open to traffic during peak travel hours. Additional road work may be carried out during day time hours and will be accomplished using single lane closures at selected intersections.

More information about traffic revision updates and construction changes will come as the contractor announces them. For road conditions, call 967-1733.

Hiring Heroes fair

A career fair for wounded, ill, injured and transitioning servicemembers will take place Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at American Lake Community Center at 8085 NCO Beach Road on Joint Base Lewis-McChord Lewis North.

Veterans, military spouses and primary caregivers are also welcome. Come talk with DOD, other federal agencies and private sector recruiters about future opportunities in civilian career fields.

Even if you’re not getting out of the military for another six months or longer — come and talk with recruiters and start networking now.

Survivors’ day at lake

Sign up now for the Surviving Family Members Appreciation Day at American Lake Community Center Aug. 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants receive a free buffet lunch and child care.

The host, JBLM’s Survivor Outreach Program, will provide current information on benefits; representatives from organizations, agencies and assistance teams will be on site to answer questions.

The Army Family Action Plan Conference meets once a year in the fall and would like your ideas for improving the quality of life for Soldiers, Airmen and their Families at JBLM.

Resiliency academy

JBLM teens are invited to register for Army Community Service’s free Youth Resiliency Academy at Waller Hall Aug 18. The all-day workshop prepares teens to respond more positively to adversity and overcome challenges they face in school, in peer groups and at home.

Triple threat triathlon

JBLM Sports and Fitness presents the last of the 19th annual Triple Threat Triathlon Series Aug. 20. Swim, bike and run your way to glory as you compete for the coveted “triple threat crown.” The series consists of a 250- or 800-yard swim, 15-mile bike and three-mile run at Shoreline Park on American Lake and on trails at Lewis North.

Child care during PCS

Have kids? If you’re an active duty Air Force member PCSing to or from McChord Field, you may be eligible for free child care.

The Air Force Aid Society pays up to 20 hours of child care for each eligible dependent child. Certificates are good for within 60 days of PCS. Call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 982-2695 for details.

Puyallup Med. Home

The Madigan-Puyallup Community Medical Home, located at 10507, 156th Street East, Suite 112 in Puyallup is accepting active duty Family member patients. Football info meeting

An information meeting for intramural will be held Aug. 24, 2 p.m. at Cowan Stadium. The season starts Sept. 12, with a preseason tournament being held Sept. 9 and 10.

SGMs Association golf

The Sergeants Major Association will host their annual golf tournament to raise funds in support of our Soldiers and their families. The tournament will be held at McChord Field at the Whispering Firs Golf Course Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. The cost is $50 for DOD ID cardholders, $65 for those without ID cards, and it covers green fees, 1/2 golf cart, prizes and dinner meal.

Boeing PGA Tour golf

The Boeing Classic is an official event on the PGA Champions Tour, which features the legends of golf 50 years of age or older. The winner of the 2010 Presidents Award honoring the best event on the Champions Tour. In the tournament’s six-year history, nearly 3.2 million dollars has been raised for the Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center, the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason and additional Greater Seattle Charities.

The 2011 event will be played August 22 to 28 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. Highlights during the week include the Rumble at the Ridge (Aug. 22), the First Tee Youth Clinic (Aug. 23) and the Korean Air Pro-Am (August 24 and 25). Tournament competition will take place from Aug. 26 to 28.

Texas Hold’em tourney

Career day at Cheney

All job-seeking members of the military Family — veterans from all conflicts, military transitioners, job-seeking National Guard and Reserve forces, wounded warriors, caregivers, military spouses and Family members are welcome to a unique career day in the Summit Club at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma Sept. 2.

Participate in a wide range of activities, from practice interviews through on-site interviews. Talk to hiring managers about available positions and your dream job. Five-minute practice interviews will be taped and played back for professional critiques of job applicants. A webinar is also available for preparation.

Stay for the Rainiers game afterward, seated in a section reserved for career-day attendees, with 750 tickets given away to early-arriving job seekers. Ballpark food and fireworks is on the agenda, along with a Rainiers victory.
