September means time for outdoor sports like football and soccer, but the Joint Base Lewis-McChord bowling alleys offer an alternative indoor option.

The youth bowling league at Bowl Arena Lanes on Lewis Main begins Saturday, while Sounders Lanes’ youth league on McChord Field begins Sept. 17.

“It’s a great thing for parents who are trying to find activities for the kids where they don’t have to sit outside in the rain and watch,” Bowl Arena Lanes Manager Janet Foster said.

Youth bowlers from toddlers to teenagers can sign up at any time at Bowl Arena Lanes. League play is every Saturday at 10 a.m. starting Saturday and ending in May. It is $8 per child every week and includes three games and shoes.

The league is open to bowlers of all levels.

“They don’t have to be tournament bowlers,” said Bruce Sylvia of Bowl Arena Lanes. “There are no bench warmers.”

The sign-up sheet was nearly full two weeks before the league begins. The league attracts anywhere from 60 to 110 bowlers.

“This might be a banner year for us,” Sylvia said.

The youth bowling leagues are flexible for multi-sport athletes. If another sport conflicts with bowling on Saturdays, bowlers are able to make up their games when they’re able to and still remain part of the team.

There are league tournaments as well as opportunities for competing off post. Last year Bowl Arena Lanes hosted 157 bowlers competing in 12 tournaments outside of the youth league.

The bowlers’ efforts culminated in 87 awards, including 30 first place, 24 second place and 11 third place awards in local and state tournaments.

“This past year was probably the best year for kids who wanted to go to tournaments outside of JBLM,” Sylvia said.

At the end of the season all bowlers receive at least one trophy.

Sign ups for Sounders Lane’s youth league are Saturday. There will be free bowling for the Family on sign up day.

The league begins Sept. 17 and is every Saturday at 9:45 a.m. It is also $8 for three games.
