Oktoberfest: good food, good music, good times

Published: 02:17PM September 29th, 2011

It’s time for another round.

The second annual Joint Base Lewis-McChord Oktoberfest is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Fest Tent on Lewis Main.

This year’s event is just one day compared to last year’s three-day festival.

“It will be more authentic this year,” said Elizabeth Thunstedt, special events entertainment coordinator for FMWR. “For people who came last year, it will be a lot more fun this year.”

There is no admission charge. Five Star Catering, based out of the American Lake Community Center, will prepare the authentic German menu which includes schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerkraut and red cabbage.

Oktoberfest is open to all ages, but there are no activities or games for children. Beginning at 11 a.m. a variety of musical acts will provide entertainment, including traditional German tunes. Oktoberfest originated in Germany in 1810 and is an annual festival typically held from late September to the first weekend in October.

“A lot of people that work here have been to Germany. It’s a good time,” Thunstedt said.

Rock Star Live returns at 8 p.m., when people can sing karaoke with a live band.

A variety of Oktoberfest brews will be available on draft and those 21 and older can purchase alcohol. Volunteer servicemembers will drive the Better Opportunities for Single Service Members van Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Call 208-9169 for a ride.
