Rugby players needed for Commander’s Cup

Eight practice sessions left before Army-Navy match

The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Army rugby team is recruiting players for the 13th Annual Army vs. Navy Commander’s Cup Nov. 12.

No experience is needed to join the rugby team. There are eight practices left before the competition. Practices are next Tuesday and Thursday, along with Oct. 25 and 27 from 11:45 a.m.to 1 p.m. at Cowan Stadium and continues Nov. 1, 3, 8 and 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at JBLM Youth Field.

The Commander’s Cup will be played at a yet to be determined location at 1 p.m.

For a chance to watch some of the best rugby players in the Northwest, including former Soldiers, the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Championship is Sunday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

The all-day tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. and will feature collegiate teams from Central Washington University, University of Washington, Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, Western Washington University and University of Puget Sound, as well as teams from Idaho and Oregon schools.

Each match is 14 minutes. Teams play two pool matches then move on to the semifinals and finals.

The tournament is a qualifying event for the USA Collegiate Rugby 7s National Championship.
