Sabine Pullins can often be spotted running on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The Army spouse is more than likely training for an ultra marathon, a marathon, a half marathon, or any other type of distance race.

Pullins and JBLM Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation concluded its 2011 race calendar Saturday with Santa’s Reindeer Dash at Eagle’s Pride Golf Course. The terrain and frosty weather made the family friendly race a challenge, but Pullins made it look easy.

Pullins was the first female 10K finisher in 43 minutes, 8 seconds.

“It never gets easier,” she said. “Last year it was the same. The hills are definitely challenging.”

Right behind Pullins was Tana Kornachuk, who finished in 43:28. Pullins said fun runs like the Reindeer Dash are important for any distance runner to participate in.

“It’s good speed work,” Pullins said. “It’s always good to toss in something short and hard. You should always toss in the short stuff.”

Nicholas Harvey breezed through the 10K and was the first male to finish in 38:03. The second place overall 10K finisher didn’t come in until four minutes later. A runner for most of his life, 22-year-old Harvey has run the annual December race several times.

“It’s kind of a slower course,” he said. “There are a lot of hills out there.”

The race also included a 5K field as well as a 2K fun run for children. Santa and Mrs. Claus were present to pose for photos and greet children as they crossed the finish line.

Tatian Van Steinburg led the 5K female field with a time of 21:22 and 16-year-old Thomas Bolt led the male 5K race with his time of 18:58.

The 2012 race year begins with the St. Patty’s Day 5K and 10K run March 17.

“There are high hopes for next year,” JBLM Intramural Sports Coordinator Kathy Salcedo said. “We’ll start it off with a big bang for St. Patty’s Day.”
