Civilians can be fit
Survive holiday excesses or get back into shape anytime with the Civilian Fitness Program. The 2012 schedule for assessments is Feb. 21, March 20, April 17, June 5, July 12, Sep. 11, Oct. 9 and Nov. 6. Appointments begin at 8 a.m. unless otherwise announced.
There is also a mandatory wellness/injury prevention class. Participants attend both sessions. To sign up online, first call 967-5122.
New skate days, hours
Army Family Covenant Arena skating has new hours, new prices and party packages available for unique birthday celebrations.
Skating is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for open skate and special skate sessions.
Prayer breakfast The JBLM National Prayer Breakfast will be held Wednesday, 7 a.m. at the McChord Collocated Club on McChord Field. The guest speaker is the Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain, Archbishop of Seattle.

Texas Hold Em Play to win in a one-day Texas Hold Em tournament at the club and community center at McChord Field Saturday.

Sign-ups begin at 1 p.m. in the Heritage Room; the tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. The $18 cost includes a light buffet. A no-host bar is also available.

Kids winter soccer

Housing Office hours
Due to manpower reductions, effective immediately, the Housing Services Office customer service hours of operation are as follows:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In addition, hours of operation the last Thursday of every month are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
These hours apply to both HSO customer service locations: 5128 Pendleton Ave, Lewis Main and 553 Barnes Blvd., McChord Field. Customers are advised that service wait times could exceed 20 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
2012 ASIST workshops
ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two day workshop that trains you to become an effective caregiver for a person at risk of suicide. Learn to assist persons at risk of suicide. perform suicide first aid, help them stay safe and seek further help.
ASIST is an interactive workshop that equips you to recognize invitations for help, reach out and offer support, review the risks of suicide, apply a suicide intervention model and link the person at risk to community resources.
Evaluations have shown ASIST to be a very effective program, increasing a caregivers knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to a person at risk of suicide.
Call the JBLM Suicide Prevention Office for more information or to sign up for an ASIST T-2 class on the following dates: Feb. 9-10 and 23-24; March 8-9 and 22-23; April 12-13 and 26-27; May 10-11 and 17-18; June 7-8, 21-22; July 12-13 and 26-27; Aug. 16-17 and 23-24; Sept. 6-7 and 20-21.

Semi-pro hoops tryout
The Lakewood Panthers of the Womens Blue Chip Basketball League will hold an open tryout Saturday at Old Grey Middle School in Tacoma at 6 to 8 p.m.

Legal assistance hours
The hours of operation on Tuesdays and Thursdays have changed for the JBLM Lewis Main Legal Assistance Office, Building 2027. Hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will remain the same.
The new hours are as follows: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for attorney services; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for notary and power-of-attorney services. Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for attorney services, notary and power-of-attorney services.

AF education grants
Concerned about the soaring cost of higher education for your children? Maybe the Air Force Aid Society can help.
Under its General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program, the society awards $2,000 each to selected applicants. The program continues to be offered to sons and daughters of Air Force active duty, deceased and many categories of retired Air Force members.

Towing in progress
All trailers, boats, RVs and nonfunctioning vehicles illegally parked on Joint Base Lewis-McChord are now being towed at the owners expense.
Army Regulation 190-5 says all trailers, boats and RVs must be kept on storage lots or elsewhere off of the installation. The same applies to abandoned and nonfunctioning privately owned vehicles.
Non-functioning vehicles are not authorized to be parked on JBLM, except at the auto craft shop.
Apply for scholarship
The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund is currently accepting 2012 scholarship applications through March 31. Applications can be downloaded from www.fortlewisscholarship.com. Applicants are encouraged to use the fill-in form.
Family members of active duty servicemembers, retirees and surviving Family members are eligible to receive scholarships without regard to the income level of the Family or the rank of the servicemember. The applicant remains anonymous until the process is complete.
The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund typically awards more than $20,000 per year, which comes from charitable donations from many sources. Applications are judged on criteria including but not limited to essay response, grades, community involvement and leadership.

Child care providers
Looking for a fun, rewarding job? Become a Family child care provider and make a difference in the lives of military children and their Families. FCC providers earn up to $2,000 a month, may qualify for subsidies, and receive free child care while in training and free resources for your business.
Learn about FCC at the Tuesday orientation from 6 to 8 p.m. at the FCC office in Building 2013B. Full-day training classes meet meet Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 and Feb. 6. FCC will provide free child care during the training. For information, call the FCC office at 967-3039.
Put down that cell
Law Enforcement personnel are issuing district court violation notices (i.e., federal magistrate court ticket) for using cell phones while driving on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
This will require the violator to pay a $75 fine or go to court to argue before the magistrate judge. Those who opt to continue using cell phones while driving must use a hands-free device to avoid a ticket. Repeat offenders risk losing installation driving privileges at the discretion of the garrison commander.
Volunteer judges
In recognition of the partnership between Clover Park School District and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the district invites military and civilian personnel from JBLM to serve as judges at the 2012 Clover Park School District STEM Fair March 10, at Lakes High School, 10320 Farwest Dr. SW, Lakewood. Schedule of events:
9 a.m. Breakfast
9:15 - 10 a.m. Orientation for judges (for the elementary session)
10 a.m. Opening remarks by the superintendent
10:10 - 11:40 a.m. Elementary judging session
11:15 - noon Orientation for judges (for the secondary session) and lunch.

Complete information about the STEM Fair and judging process will be provided before the judging sessions on the day of the STEM Fair. Judging is divided into one group for elementary students and another group for secondary students.
