Financial resiliency expo scheduled for DOD employees

As government employees brace themselves for impending sequestration-connected furloughs and the financial pain they will cause, Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Financial Readiness Program offers help to plan for those pay cuts in the form of a financial expo April 12.

The event, a Financial Resiliency Expo, will bring together local lenders, local and major financial institutions, utility companies and nearly a dozen other agencies ready to assist Department of Defense employees. Some will offer strategies to cope with lost income. like setting up alternate payment plans to fit their lower income.

FRP will hold the expo at the Stone Education Center on JBLM Lewis Main from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will also offer 90-minute employee financial fitness seminars scheduled to begin at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. During the seminars, financial experts will explain to employees how to calculate the cuts they’ll suffer by pay periods.

The seminars will also cover credit management, utilities issues, landlord/tenant issues, money management and budgeting, stress management, mortgages and refinancing.

“It’s important that employees realize leadership cares about them, and this is our way of showing them we understand there will be financial difficulties, and this is our way of helping them work through them,” said Alicia Grady, chief of JBLM’s Army Community Services Division.

Participants will include the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, Employee Assistance Program, ACS, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, Consumer Credit Counseling Service, RideShare, Veteran’s Administration and Military Family Life Consultants.
