V-WISE empowers women vets

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University announces the seventh offering of its Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) conference, hosted in Seattle, Aug. 16 to 18. V-WISE is one of the first federally-funded programs focused on creating entrepreneurial opportunities for female veterans and launched by Syracuse University in cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Seattle conference includes a full agenda of keynote speakers and course instructors from academia, industry, government and the military who will provide women veterans with tools to become successful entrepreneurs. Get biz ideas/American Dream U

Invest in your own pursuit of the American dream of business ownership with American Dream University. ADU is a nonprofit organization designed to give back to those who have given us the privilege of pursuing our dreams. The next event is today from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Carey Theater on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Hear from a speaker panel on a variety of topics related to finding a business idea and making your first steps towards running a business.

Enroll in SEA

The Software Engineering Academy provides training in the field of software development and testing. SEA is designed for active duty service members transitioning from military service and members of the Guard and Reserve. Program is 16 weeks and participants are assigned to the SEA as their place of duty. Info sessions are June 25, July 1 and July 11 at Stone and Hawk Ed centers.

This program prepares technicians with the entry level skills needed to work with composite materials on aircraft. The Aerospace industry has an ongoing demand for employees with these skills. Classes are held Monday through Friday, 4 to 8:15 p.m.

Women Veterans Summit

Register now for the 2013 Women Veterans Summit scheduled June 29 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, 1500 Broadway, Tacoma. The theme is Women in the Military: Honoring the Past ... Driving into the Future.

Refine your carpentry skills

Vets Restore offers training, mentoring, and job placement guidance for returning veterans with construction experience in the field of preservation carpentry.

Short-term training and certificate in remodel and preservation, tuition navigation support, and a paid internship available.

Join the Military Service Parade

The Military Service Parade will spotlight notable active duty and retired military personnel in the Tacoma area, and feature marching units, community floats, select high school bands, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and JRTC units, veteran organizations, motorcycle units and veterans groups. Times, parade routes and road closures will be announced soon.
