Picnic on the WZ patio

Come out to the Warrior Zone at JBLM Lewis North Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. for their All-American Patio Picnic.

The picnic features live entertainment, games and prizes. Burger and hot dog meals are just $5 and include potato salad and baked beans.

McChord ID card hours adjusted

Customer service on McChord Field will not process passports and ID cards on Fridays from today through Sept. 30, due to civilian furloughs. Only CAC card emergencies for active-duty service members will be processed on Fridays.

Attend the Soldier Show

The 2013 United States Soldier Show will be held at the Evergreen Theater on Aug. 21. There are two performances: at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m.

New hours at the Exchanges

The hours of operation for the Exchanges on both JBLM Lewis Main and McChord Field have changed. The McChord Exchange is now open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Lewis Main Exchange will be open from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

JBLM sustainable forests certified

Most of JBLM’s forested lands have been certified since 2002 as a sustainable forestry operation by the nonprofit Forest Stewardship Council ( JBLM was the first federal ownership in the U.S. to receive certification, demonstrating the installation’s commitment to forest management practices that consider environmental, economic, and social benefits and impacts in the context of military training. Certification lasts five years. The first installation recertification came in 2007 and the second in 2012, which lasts until 2017.

Compete in Deuces Wild triathlon

JBLM Sports & Fitness presents the Deuces Wild Triathlons July 20 and Aug. 17. Swim, bike and run your way to glory as you compete for the coveted crown. The July 20 triathlon is a sprint distance and the Aug.17 triathlon is an Olympic distance. Both are at Shoreline Park on American Lake and on trails at Lewis North. Force Protection conditions posted

Force protection conditions for Joint Base Lewis-McChord are now posted on the JBLM public website at This will allow commanders to keep their Soldiers, Airmen, DOD civilians and family members aware of the current FPCON to raise security awareness.

The Military Service Parade in Tacoma will spotlight notable active duty and retired military personnel on Aug. 24, and feature marching units, community floats, select high school bands, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and JRTC units, veteran organizations, motorcycle units and veterans groups. Put down that cell

Law Enforcement personnel are issuing district court violation notices for using cell phones while driving on JBLM.This will require the violator to pay a $75 fine or go to court to argue before the magistrate judge. Those who opt to continue using cell phones while driving must use a hands-free device to avoid a ticket. Repeat offenders risk losing installation driving privileges.

Golf scrambles are back

The CG’s Payday Scrambles are back at Whispering Firs and Eagles Pride golf courses.

If you’re an ID cardholder, you and your friends can enter five-person scrambles on the following Fridays with a 1 p.m. shotgun start: Aug. 2 at Whispering Firs and Sept. 6 at Eagles Pride. The cost is $30 per person and includes your greens fee, cart rental and a chance to win prizes. You can enter as a team or be placed on a team if you enter individually. EAP now at McChord Field

The Employee Assistance Program is now available at JBLM McChord Field, at 555 Barnes Blvd (CE Building).

Recycle more, smaller items

To achieve JBLM’s goal of net zero waste by 2020, installation recycling centers expanded the variety of commodities accepted. For details, check the website at The JBLM Lewis Main Recycle Center no longer accepts excess or oversized garbage from on-base residents. Residents can request curbside bulk pick-up of oversized or excess garbage by emailing or contacting their Equity Residential housing representative.

Heroes Lounge changes hours

Heroes Lounge inside Cascade Community Center is open Wednesdays for free bar bingo with food purchase, Thursdays and Fridays in the afternoon and evening, and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m. (if a UFC fight is airing, doors open early).

It is closed Sundays through Tuesdays until football season begins.

Beware of classic cyclists this weekend

The annual 200-mile Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic will take place Saturday and Sunday. Up to 10,000 cyclists are expected to be navigating roads and highways between the two cities. Part of the route takes participants behind Joint Base Lewis-McChord on state Route 507 from Spanaway through Roy, Yelm, Rainier to Centralia and Chehalis. The JBLM Safety Office and Directorate of Emergency Services asks motorists in the region to be mindful of the unusually large number of bicycle enthusiasts they will encounter, especially on SR 507.Organizers encourage participants to enjoy the pastoral diversity in the Pacific Northwest scenery of Washington and Oregon. They are advised to ride single-file, but bunches of cyclists have historically required extra caution from passing motorists during this weekend. It is important for motorists to be watchful and understanding of participants during the event this weekend. Take extra care at intersections and traffic signals so everyone gets home safely.
