Visit Museum for half-price

The Museum of Flight offers half-price admission tickets to furloughed civilian employees of JBLM. Employees may bring a guest at the same discounted rate and must present their Department of Defense identification card. Offer valid through Sept. 30.

Attend Asian Film Fest

The First Annual Lakewood Film Fest will be held Aug. 16 - 18 at the Lakewood Playhouse. The film fest features five award-winning Asian films and live preshow entertainment. Admission is free. Film fest is co-hosted by the Lakewood Arts Commission. For more information call 253-588-0042.

Services for the JBLM Buddhist Community

Join us at the North Fort Chapel every Thursday evening for Buddhist meditation and Dharma talk, 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 - 7 p.m. respectively. The meditation is focused on control of thought formation for stress reduction and Dharma talk includes The Eight Fold Nobe Path and The Four Noble Truths.

Honor U.S. Army combat infantrymen

A memorial monument honoring the contributions of combat infantrymen will be dedicated on Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. on the memorial walkway at the Tahoma National Cemetery near Covington. McChord ID card hours adjusted

Customer service on McChord Field will not process passports and ID cards on Fridays from today through Sept. 30, due to civilian furloughs.

Only CAC card emergencies for active-duty service members will be processed on Fridays.

Register for Scream-free parenting event

Parents are invited to attend a free “Scream-Free Parenting” event, 9-11 a.m. Aug. 15 at Lewis North Fort Chapel, 11621 South Drive and 12th Street.

The event features a principle-based approach from the Scream Free Parenting Institute to help parents revolutionize how they parent their children. Free childcare will be provided for the first 100 registrants.

Attend free Soldier Show performance

The 2013 U.S. Army Soldier Show will be held at the Evergreen Theater on Aug. 21. The two performances, at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. are family-style variety shows, professionally choreographed. Video LED technology creates virtual settings throughout the show.

This year’s theme is “Ready and Resilient.”

The shows are free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Today is the last day to register for a special youth Sounders FC Summer Camp at Cowan Stadium, JBLM Lewis Main. The camp is designed for beginners to intermediates ages 4 to 15.

New hours at the Exchanges

The hours of operation for the Exchanges on both JBLM Lewis Main and McChord Field have changed. The McChord Exchange is now open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Lewis Main Exchange will be open from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

JBLM sustainable forests certified

Most of JBLM’s forested lands have been certified since 2002 as a sustainable forestry operation by the nonprofit Forest Stewardship Council ( http://us.fsc.org ). JBLM was the first federal ownership in the U.S. to receive certification, demonstrating the installation’s commitment to forest management practices that consider environmental, economic, and social benefits and impacts in the context of military training. Certification lasts five years. The first installation recertification came in 2007 and the second in 2012, which lasts until 2017.

Compete in Deuces Wild triathlon

JBLM Sports & Fitness presents the Deuces Wild Triathlon Aug. 17. Swim, bike and run your way to glory as you compete for the coveted crown. Force Protection conditions posted

Force protection conditions for Joint Base Lewis-McChord are now posted on the JBLM public website at http://www.lewis-mcchord.army.mil/. This will allow commanders to keep their Soldiers, Airmen, DOD civilians and family members aware of the current FPCON to raise security awareness.

Join the Military Service Parade

The Military Service Parade in Tacoma will spotlight notable active duty and retired military personnel Aug. 24, and feature marching units, community floats, high school bands, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and JRTC units, veteran organizations, motorcycle units and veterans groups.

Put down that cell

Law Enforcement personnel are issuing district court violation notices for using cell phones while driving on JBLM.This will require the violator to pay a $75 fine or go to court to argue before the magistrate judge.

Those who opt to continue using cell phones while driving must use a hands-free device to avoid a ticket. Repeat offenders risk losing installation driving privileges.

Perform on open mic night

Like to perform? The Warrior Zone at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Lewis North features open mic night on the patio Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

This is your chance if you’re dying to share your drop-dead rendition of “Billie Jean” or “Born in the ¨USA,” perform stand-up comedy, read poetry and more.

Golf scrambles are back

The CG’s Payday Scramble are back at Whispering Firs and Eagles Pride golf courses.

If you’re an ID cardholder, you and your friends can enter five-person scrambles on the following Fridays with a 1 p.m. shotgun start: today at Whispering Firs and Sept. 6 at Eagles Pride.

The cost is $30 per person and includes your greens fee, cart rental and a chance to win prizes. You can enter as a team or be placed on a team if you enter individually.

EAP now at McChord Field

The Employee Assistance Program is now available at JBLM McChord Field, at 555 Barnes Blvd (CE Building).

Recycle more, smaller items

To achieve JBLM’s goal of net zero waste by 2020, installation recycling centers expanded the variety of commodities accepted.

National night out against crime

Join forces with communities nationwide for the 30th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. From 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, residents in neighborhoods throughout JBLM and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout JBLM will be hosting a variety of special events such as Military Working Dog demonstration, live music, video games, bicycle rodeo and visits from McGruff the Crime Dog.

Military police will also be present for walks through the neighborhood.

Lewis-McChord communities will open community centers and raffle off prizes, as well as provide free popcorn and goodies.

Take an advanced motorcycle class

The Joint Base Safety Office is offering additional Experienced Rider and Military Sport Bike Courses.

These classes are for those Active Duty personnel who have already taken the Basic Rider Course and need to fulfill the sustainment training requirement or those who would like to brush up on their motorcycle skills.

Participate in motorcycle dice run

Participate in Rock and Rally for the Troops, benefiting wounded service members, Saturday, Tacoma waterfront, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The event features a Motorcycle Dice Run and outdoor music festival. There will also be a silent auction featuring autographed items from the Seattle Sounders, P.O.D., Alice in Chains and more.

Same-day registration for the Motorcycle Dice Run is at Rock the Docks Pub and Grill, 535 Dock Street in Tacoma. Sign up begins at 9 a.m. Music festival begins at 3:30 p.m. Outside vendors, booths and bike viewing is open to all ages. Individuals must be 21 to enter the beer garden. Free parking is available.
