Homebrewers compete for best of JBLM

Learn to paint vets in art of honor project
Art of Honor is a community project where family members or service members can honor their favorite veteran by painting that veterans portrait during a three-hour workshop.
Seattle artist Sally Brucker and other area artists will help you paint a portrait of your favorite veteran Feb. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., on a 16-inch x 20-inch canvas. The workshop, canvas, brushes and paint are all provided for free. The workshop will be at the Nelson Recreation Center on JBLM Lewis Main (2nd Division and Faith Avenue).
Sally Brucker, founder of Art of Honor, has been an art instructor for 13 years. In the fall of 2006 she came up with the idea to honor her Medal of Honor awardee-dad, World War II and Korean War veteran Clarence B. Craft, by painting his portrait.

Take part in Disaster Preparedness Day
Register for the American Red Cross Disaster Preparedness Day Jan. 25 at the McChord Library.
Seniors can kick off the day at 10:30 a.m. with Disaster Preparedness for Seniors by Seniors. In this class, you will learn how to calmly react to a natural disaster, how to prepare a disaster kit and other safety tools specific to seniors.
Children can join in at 1 p.m. to learn basic first aid, such as how to make a sling, help a choking victim and when to call 911. In the Passport to Preparedness portion of this class, you will learn what natural disasters are most common in Washington, how to react to them and how to help your family prepare.
Adults, are you new to the area? Come to the McChord Library at 2:30 p.m. to learn which natural disasters you are most likely to face while living in Washington. Learn to be a Red Cross lifeguard
JBLM Aquatics is offering American Red Cross lifeguarding classes Saturdays, Jan. 11, 18 and 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Keeler Pool, 9993 Garfield St. on Lewis Main. The cost is $50, which includes a pocket mask and certificates if the student passes the course. Students must be at least age 15 and pass a pretest (300M swim, 2-minute tread and underwater retrieval).

Apply for a Family Member Scholarship
The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund is accepting 2014 scholarship applications through March 26. Download applications at fortlewisscholarship.com. Applicants are encouraged to use the faster fill-in form.
Family members of active duty Soldiers, retirees and surviving family members are eligible to receive scholarships without regard to the income level of the family or the rank of the service member. The applicant remains anonymous until the process is complete.
The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund typically awards more than $30,000 per year, which comes from charitable donations from many sources. Applications are judged on a variety of criteria including but not limited to essay response, grades, community involvement and leadership.

The Warrior Zone closes for repairs

New website supports soldier innovation
The U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force recently launched ArmyCoCreate.com, a website that encourages Soldiers to identify tactical challenges and collaborate with innovators and other civilian suppporters to design solutions and build prototypes.
The proof-to-concept effort will test the applicability of crowd-powered design processes for the REF mission.

Service members who deploy or are otherwise separated from their families due to mission needs now have an online resource allowing them to hone their parenting skills as they reconnect with their children.
The website offers comprehensive, free computer-based training on parenting, building strong relationships, while providing ideas for technology-based activities that may aid in reuniting parents and children after deployment.

JBLM SHARP office open for one-stop service
The Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention office is now open to serve the JBLM community.
The program offers an avenue for sexual assult reporting, sexual harassment complaints and advocacy services for military personnel and their family members over the age of 18. The SHARP office provides training for military units, work sections, and family readiness groups.
