Sergeant 1st Class Robert Hunnicutt knew of the Commander’s Sports Trophy, but in his 17 years of service he had never seen one.

Until now.

The 47th Combat Support Hospital sports representative was present Dec. 19 to accept the 2013 Commander’s Sports Trophy for the unit’s participation and success in Joint Base Lewis-McChord intramural activities.

“It’s something you don’t see too often,” Hunnicutt said. “I’ve never seen a unit or even heard of anybody who has won one.”

The Commander’s Sports Trophy is awarded annually to the JBLM unit that accumulates the most points in intramural basketball, swimming, bowling, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, softball, golf, Sound to Narrows Military Run, flag football and wrestling. Points are awarded based on participation, league placement and post season placement.

The 47th CSH participated in all but two sports in 2013: swimming and the cross-country series. The unit placed in its league in basketball, soccer and flag football, and took second in the Sound to Narrows Military Run Mega Squad Category in June. In some sports 47th CSH had more than one team competing to include as many Soldiers as possible.

“We’re just happy to play in all of them,” Hunnicutt said. “It’s a good thing to get the Soldiers out of the barracks and give them something to do. We’re proud of all of them. Win or not, we’re proud to have filled a team.”

As well as competing in regular intramural sports, the unit also competed in the 2013 Army Sports Program, placing second in volleyball and third in soccer.

Early in 2013 all battalions were asked by the JBLM Intramural Sports Office to select a sports representative to be the point of contact between the office and unit. JBLM Intramural Programmer Tara Ricci credits Hunnicutt’s diligent work as the 47th CSH sports representative for the unit receiving the Commander’s Sports Trophy.

“He was really good at getting the information down to the unit, asking us the right questions and forming teams in almost every sport,” Ricci said. “The goal of our program isn’t to produce amazing athletes, it’s for maximum participation and they met that intent.”

The 47th CSH also assisted the JBLM Intramural Sports Office with detail support for a 2013 race and provided equipment for the McChord Field Sports Day.

The unit’s commander, Col. Ronald Krogh, along with Hunnicutt and Sgt. 1st Class Owen Neufville, accepted the coveted Commander’s Sports Trophy at the 2013 JBLM Intramural Flag Football Championship at Cowan Stadium on Lewis Main. The 46th Aviation Support Battalion was awarded the trophy the previous year.

The 47th CSH is already off to a strong start in intramural sports for 2014, as it won the preseason basketball tournament.

“That was the first one out of the box for FY ‘14,” Hunnicutt said.
