Net Zero could net $7,500 for your unit

Participate in the semiannual JBLM Net Zero Competition and win up to $7,500 for your unit fund account. To participate in Competition No. 3 (from April 1 to Aug. 31), Units need to register by March 26.

Your participation in this competition contributes to fewer tax dollars spent; a reduced environmental “bootprint”; and progress towards JBLM becoming a Net Zero installation by 2020.

Apply for a Family Member Scholarship

The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund is accepting 2014 scholarship applications through March 26. Download applications at fortlewisscholarship.com. Applicants are encouraged to use the faster fill-in form.

Family members of active duty Soldiers, retirees and surviving family members are eligible to receive scholarships without regard to the income level of the family or the rank of the service member. The applicant remains anonymous until the process is complete.

The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund typically awards more than $30,000 per year, which comes from charitable donations from many sources. Applications are judged on a variety of criteria including but not limited to essay response, grades, community involvement and leadership.

Before/after-school child care spaces

Child care spaces are available now for pre-toddler, toddler, preschool and kindergarten age groups, as well as before- and after-school care and in youth centers for middle schoolers and teens.

The nationally accredited, regularly inspected centers typically cost $2 to $3 per hour less than off-base facilities. Multiple child discounts are available.

Make your home a scream-free zone CYSS

This eight-session class begins Thursday and teaches the proven principles for overcoming the anxieties and stresses of parenting and how to set new patterns of connection and cooperation. You can catch up with the book/workbook if you miss a session. Bring your lunch and learn the proven principles for overcoming the anxieties and stresses of parenting. Nominations open for Volunteer of the Year

Recognize your volunteers’ contributions by nominating them for the JBLM Volunteer of the Year award.

Anyone may nominate a JBLM registered volunteer by completing the Volunteer of the Year nomination form and following the procedures outlined. Nominations will be accepted through March 17.

Forms are available at the Family Resource Center, online at www.jblmmwr.com or by emailing lori.j.parker2.civ@mail.mil. Nominations must be typed, and hand-carried to the Family Resource Center at 9th Division Drive and Idaho Avenue, Lewis Main. Categories for Volunteer of the Year are: adult, family, active duty, retiree, and youth (18 and younger). Nominations are for accomplishments, impact and contributions to organizations on JBLM during calendar year 2013.

The Volunteer of the Year will be recognized at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon May 1.

Pendleton Gate near Pet Bde now open

The Pendleton Gate will be open 4-6 p.m. weekdays for outbound Lewis Main and Lewis North traffic making a right turn only onto DuPont-Steilacoom Road. The Pendleton Gate is located on Lewis North, near the Pet Brigade.

To access Pendleton Gate: From Lewis North, take Main Street past the Lewis Army Museum, and turn right just before the bend (last right-turn before the Pendleton underpass), and continue past the Pet Brigade to the gate. From Lewis Main, take Pendleton Blvd. through the Pendleton underpass, take the first left, and proceed straight to the gate.

Register for youth aquatics, track & field

Special Olympics aquatics and track & field is open to ages 8-18 with and without special needs. Sign up through March 21 for $55 per child. The track season begins March 11, aquatics March 10, both run to June 1.

Youth can run, jump and throw at track and field practice. Sign them up Feb. 24 to March 21 for $55 per person. Track and field is open to ages 6 to 15. Practice starts March 27.

Co-op preschool gives military discounts

Steilacoom Cooperative Preschool, serving JBLM, DuPont, Steilacoom, Lakewood and the surrounding communities, invites parents to monthly open houses. The nonprofit preschool follows the cooperative school model in which parents and teachers work side by side. Parent participation and fundraising make tuition more affordable.

The school offers 25 percent tuition discounts to active duty military parents.

Open houses are scheduled every month; stop by to meet the teacher, see the classroom, play with classmates and chat with parents. The next open houses are scheduled for March 24 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., April 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and May 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 8601 104th St. SW, Lakewood, Wash., 98498.

McChord Commissary club opens today

The Defense Commissary Agency is testing a new club store format, the first of its kind in the continental U.S., at the McChord Commissary beginning today. Shoppers will choose among club packs and oversized packages of meat, produce, dairy and frozen foods, as well as regular groceries and supplies from new racks, new freezers and refrigerators at the back of the store. The rest of the commissary will stay intact with normally sized items. The only membership card shoppers require is a military ID.

Annual ammunition amnesty day coming

It’s the annual JBLM ammunition amnesty day, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the C-5A mock-up on East Gate Road. No questions asked, no penalty, no paperwork required. Amnesty items can be turned in weekdays during normal duty hours at the JBLM Ammunition Supply Point or any amnesty points on base. Prior coordination is recommended for .50-caliber ammunition or above. Call 967-5800/2400.

Fire prevention class required for unit reps

The JBLM Fire Prevention Office reminds all commanders and directors they are required by AR 420-1 to establish and maintain fire prevention programs in their organizations. The FPO provides certification training. Building managers and evacuation coordinators appointed by commanders must attend classes before assuming their duties. Classes are taught on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in Building 2014. Contact the JBLM Fire Prevention Office at 966-7156.

Op: baby shower preps expecting dads, moms

New or expecting moms and dads are invited to Operation: Baby Shower at the McChord Club/Community Center March 15 from 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. The free event includes door prizes, games, eats and treats, mocktail bar, nursing lounge, a Wii Fit tournament for dads and more. Call 982-0718.

Enter Shamrock ‘n run; stout optional

Have “Rock ‘n Run” fun at the 5K/10K Shamrock ‘n Run March 15 at the MWR Fest Tent at Lewis Main with prerace Irish and popular music with deejay Chrissy Williams. After the race, participants with running bibs get a free authentic Irish banger sausage on a bun. Additional bangers and Irish stout will be available for purchase.

Youth baseball signups start Monday

Good news for young baseball players. The season is almost here. Register through March 28. Spring baseball is open to youth ages 5 to 15 for $60. Lil’ Batters is open to youngsters ages 3 to 4 for $20. Practices begin April 21 for both. The Lil’ Batters season ends June 5; spring baseball ends June 14. Parent meetings: April 17 and 18 for Lil’ Batters and spring ball.

Compete in 593rd ESC Triathlon event

Participate in the “Rest Assured Challenge” 593rd Triathlon May 10 as an individual or unit.

The event includes a 500-meter pool swim, a 90 km bicycle ride and a three mile run. The triathlon is limited to 300 participants.

JBLM SHARP office open for one-stop service

The Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention office is now open to serve the JBLM community.

The program offers an avenue for sexual assult reporting, sexual harassment complaints and advocacy services for military personnel and their family members over 18. The SHARP office provides training for military units, work sections, and family readiness groups.

The Teen Zone at JBLM Lewis Main offers before-school care at 5:30 a.m. until students take the bus to Woodbrook Middle School, Harrison Prep, Mann Middle School and Lakes High School. The service is fee-based; participants must be registered with CYSS.

Service members who deploy or are otherwise separated from their families due to mission needs now have an online resource to hone their parenting skills as they reconnect with their children.
