Annual ammunition amnesty day coming

It’s the annual JBLM ammunition amnesty day, Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the C-5A mock-up on East Gate Road. No questions aksed, no penalty, no paperwork required. Amnesty items can be turned in weekdays during normal duty hours at the JBLM Ammunition Supply Point or any amnesty points on base. Prior coordination is recommended for .50-caliber ammunition or above. Call 967-5800/2400.

Wounded warrior youth softball

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is hosting the 2014 Youth Softball Tournament in conjunction with the Seattle/Tacoma Amateur Softball Association to benefit the Wounded Warrior Fund.

The tournament is being held May 24-26 at the McChord Field youth and adult softball complexes (between Col. Joe Jackson Boulevard and 5th Street) starting at 8 a.m. Concessions and other activities will be available during the tournament.

Army ten-miler tryouts May 10

Army active duty personnel time trials for the formation of the JBLM Army Ten-Miler Team are planned for May 10, June 7 and July 12. Arrive at 7 a.m. to check in at Cowan Stadium, Lewis Main. Those selected will attend the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C.

Final team selections need command approval to participate in team training and workouts during normal PT times.

Want to make $75 for your opinion?

Pierce County and JBLM want to hear from you about improving transportation options on and around JBLM. Are you a JBLM family member or spouse; a JBLM retiree; a JBLM civilian contract full-time employee or an active JBLM service member?

You might be eligible to participate in two-hour focus groups being conducted in late April and early May regarding transportation issues. You will be paid $75 for your participation if you are selected to be in the groups.

Join intramural softball

Softball begins in June. Unit teams, co-ed teams and women’s teams are encouraged to enter. For more information, attend a meeting May 13, 1 p.m., at Wilson Sports & Fitness Center or May 14, 1 p.m., at the McChord Fitness Center.

Military Foster homes needed

The JBLM community needs military-connected foster homes. For those interested in becoming foster parents, register for the upcoming Foster Parent Orientation Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2013 N. 3rd St. and Pendleton Boulevard, Building 2013A, Room 111, on JBLM-Lewis Main. Registration required: 206-406-2398. Being a foster parent is not a lifelong commitment, but creates a sense of accomplishment and service that will last a lifetime. As a foster parent you can still work full-time and if you live on JBLM, you may qualify for larger quarters.

Armed forces day coming soon

Experience the 2014 Armed Forces Day activities at JBLM-Lewis Main May 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cowan and Memorial stadiums. See military equipment, encampments and displays from ancient Romans through WWII, and enjoy carnival rides, roving entertainers, a volksmarch and volks bike, food and fun. The play ‘So You’re Paul’ comes to JBLM

A Biblical stage play with a dramatic conclusion comes to JBLM May 10.

Described as humorous, practical and heartwarming, its message is intended to help people discover God’s hope and peace.

Join the bicycle commute challenge

The Bicycle Commute Challenge is a great way to end hibernation, get out your bike, and start enjoying better weather. At this free website,, you can log your trips and see your standings daily. Sign up as a solo rider or get together a team.

Anyone from beginner to expert can join. Commutes can be round trip, one-way or even partway. How many days you ride is your choice.

CIF to close for inventory; plan ahead

Central Issue Facility (CIF) will be closed for Annual Inventory May 19 to 23. Emergencies will be handled on a case by case basis. Plan ahead if you or your Soldiers plan to ETS, PCS, Retire, or have other business with CIF. Soldiers that must clear during this period must have their orders stamped “Emergency Clearing” by Central Out-Processing. Come to NAC open house/yard sale

Find great bargains at the Northwest Adventure Center’s annual Open House and yard sale May 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 8050 NCO Beach Road at JBLM- Lewis North.

Equipment rentals and cabins are open for viewing. Sale items include RVs, tents, kayaks and boats, winter sports equipment and more.

If you want to bring your own items to sell, pay $10 per table for the community yard sale; register early at the NAC.

Mother’s Day brunch May 11 on JBLM

Take Mom out to the annual favorite Mother’s Day Brunch Sunday, May 11 at American Lake Conference Center at JBLM-Lewis North or the McChord Club and Community Center at JBLM-McChord Field.

Both brunches cost $24.95 for adults, $13.95 for ages 6–10, $5 for ages 3–5 and free for ages 2 and younger. McChord Club members receive a $2 discount for each meal.

Unit reps’ classes on Fire prevention

The JBLM Fire Prevention Office reminds all commanders and directors they are required by AR 420-1 to establish and maintain fire prevention programs in their organizations. The FPO provides certification training. Building managers and evacuation coordinators appointed by commanders must attend classes before assuming their duties. Classes are taught on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in Building 2014. Contact the JBLM Fire Prevention Office at 966-7156.

Warrior Zone open mic all summer

Like to perform? The Warrior Zone is bringing back Open Mic Nights on the patio Thursdays now through Sept. 25. Sign up at 6 p.m. if you want to perform, showtime from 7-10 p.m.

Whether you sing, perform comedy, read poetry, play an instrument, freestyle rap or beat box, impress the crowd with your talents.

The event is open to service members, family members and DoD civilians ages 18 and older.

Free mulch on base for your garden

Gardeners: did you know you can use shredded paper to mulch plants? Paper mulch keeps the ground cool, and smothers weeds. After the shreds have been laid down and watered, they form a blanket similar to papier-mâché... water still gets through, but the weeds can’t.

The JBLM Document Destruction Facility produces tons of paper free shreddings perfect for your garden.
