Armed Forces E9 Association Picnic

All E-9s from all branches , including active duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired service members and their family are invited to attend the annual picnic of The Armed Forces E9 Association, Washington State, Saturday at 12 noon on JBLM McChord Field’s Holiday Park Pavilion. This is a rain or shine potluck affair asking attendees to bring a covered dish, salad or desert. Meats and drinks will be provided by the organization. Free food at special military event

The Landing at Hawks Prairie shopping center will play host to a special event open to all military families from noon to 3 p.m. July 23 to honor the commitment of and sacrifices made by the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. All service members and their families are welcome for an afternoon of free hot dogs and refreshments, face painting, giveaways including coupons from center tenants, and children’s games and activities. Event will be near LA Fitness/Red Robin Plaza in the shopping center; located at 1200 Galaxy Drive N.E., Lacey.

Domestic Violence Chat July 24

“R.A.D.” Self-Defense Classes

Register for the upcoming RAD classes Saturday and July 19 (must attend both classes) or Aug. 9 & 16 (must attend both classes to complete training) taught by a nationally certified R.A.D. instructor. Family Readiness Group Training

It’s PCS season and many family readiness group volunteers are changing. Veterans in Piping apprenticeship

The JBLM - United Association “Veterans in Piping” apprenticeship program provides accelerated training for service members before leaving the military. Participants train for approximately five months in welding in Lacey, or in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) at the Stone Education Center on JBLM. Upon leaving the military, the veterans are placed in a five-year paid apprenticeship programs throughout the U.S. New-student interviews start in October. Applications are competitive. Refractive surgery appts at Madigan

Service members may be eligible for vision correction surgery free of charge at the Madigan Army Medical Center Refractive Surgery Center. Appointments are available now for medically eligible service members. Commander’s authorization required. Service members cannot deploy or go to the field for training for 30 days following Lasik procedures, or 90 days following PRK. Call 253-968-5516 for more information and pre-appointment forms.

Trek back in time at Lewis Main Chapel

Join us at Wilderness Escape Vacation Bible School, where we’ll explore what life was like for the ancient Israelites. You’ll craft projects in the Israelite camp, race through the wilderness as you play games, visit with Moses, and eat some interesting new food. Plus, you’ll meet lots of new friends! Free Seattle Pro-Am Men’s Basketball

Join the Seattle Pro-Am Men’s Summer Basketball League every Saturday and Sunday through August (except Aug. 23-24) at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Seattle Pacific University Royal Brougham Pavilion. This league is a competitive men’s basketball league featuring current and former NBA, international, minor league, and collegiate players from and in the Seattle area. Ages 17 and under are free with IDs, ages 18 and older are $5, senior citizens are free, and military personnel are free with Military IDs.

Women’s camp:

July 28-31 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Grades 5-12; $150

Men’s camp:

Aug. 4-7 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; Ages 8-15; $175

There is also a $35 military discount. Players will be instructed on how to improve their shooting, passing, and offensive skills, as well as rebounding, and defensive fundamentals. Will also feature daily individual and team shooting contests and games, awards, evaluation report card for each player. Fee includes PLU T-shirt and lunch each day. 9th annual Down and Dirty Mud Run

Wear your superhero costume for the 9th Annual JBLM Down and Dirty 5K Mud Run. Full of lots of muddy obstacles, the run is July 19 at Soldiers Field House at Lewis Main. Register by Thursday to get a race T-shirt. Find online registration, course map and details at JBLMmwr.com/races.

Sesame street show returning to JBLM

The “Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families” is coming to Joint Base Lewis-McChord July 18 and 19 with a show about making friends in new places. Choose from four free performances at the Evergreen Theater at Lewis Main.Shows are at 3 and 6 p.m. both days; doors open 30 minutes before showtime. Seating is first-come, first-served; no tickets needed. The theater is located at 3405 2nd Division.

Paint Tacoma Beautiful is seeking volunteers for several summer projects — preferably teams of 10 to 15 people each, June through August. Army Ten-miler tryouts, final call

Army active duty personnel’s last of three time trials for the formation of the JBLM Army Ten-Miler Team is scheduled for Saturday. Arrive at 7 a.m. to check in at Cowan Stadium, Lewis Main. Those selected will attend the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C. Final team selections need command approval to participate in team training and workouts during normal PT times. Everyone’s invited to Shoreline Park for free monthly outdoor movies on Saturdays. Homebuyer Education Workshop

July 29-30, 6-9:30 p.m.(Must attend both nights for a total of 7 hrs training). This workshop is designed specifically for active duty service members and their spouses, as well as prior service personnel with VA loan eligibility. Fire evacuation coordinator class

Army regulations require a Fire Evacuation Coordinator be assigned by unit commanders on memorandums and trained by the JBLM Fire Prevention Office. Training is conducted the first and third Wednesday of each month, Building 2014 at 9 a.m. Please bring two copies of the memorandums when you attend the training. Question? JBLM SHARP office open for one-stop service

The JBLM Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention office is open. The program offers an avenue for sexual assult reporting, sexual harassment complaints and advocacy services for military and family members over 18. The SHARP office provides training for military units, work sections and family readiness groups. All conversations with SHARP personnel are confidential. Lightning safety

Outside: If you can hear thunder, you are in striking distance of lightning. Look for shelter right away.

Don’t go under trees for shelter, there is no place outside that is safe from lightning.

Wait at least 30 minutes from last clap of thunder to leave shelter.

Indoors: Turn of computers, stay of anything that will put you in direct contact with electric or plumbing

Do not wash your hands, bath or do dishes during a storm.

If struck call 911.
