Pershing Circle, the roundabout in front of Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Headquarters Building, Bldg. 1010 on Lewis Main, is closing for repairs starting the second week in August. It will not reopen until construction is complete, some time in December.

Charles Markham, Directorate of Public Works deputy for Programs and Operations, said this construction will bring the circle up to modern traffic standards.

“It’s too wide right now because people are confused as to if it is a two-lane or one wide lane ,” he said.

The new circle will be one lane, but with new pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and a truck apron, a raised circle around the center for oversized vehicles to drift onto; which will take up the current extra space.

Those who use the circle will have new routes to get from the Dupont Gate to Liggett Avenue, Kaufman Avenue and Lewis Drive. Signs will be posted at the gate to let commuters know where to go with the circle temporarily out of commission. The detour routes will be chosen and posted in the coming weeks.
