Whispering Firs Championship
Golf: Sign up for the Whispering Firs Golf Course Club Championship starting at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, and continuing at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, on McChord Field. Entry fee is $50 (includes green fees) and another $10 for the putting championships (limited to 32 players). Entry forms are available at the Whispering Firs pro shop. OnaWAY 5K Run
Races: A special 5K race created to benefit VetREST (www.vetrest.org) is scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, at Powder Works Park in DuPont. The organization helps veterans recover from post-traumatic stress. Deuces Wild at Shoreline
Races: Participate in the only major triathlon held at JBLM 9 a.m., Saturday, at Shoreline Park on Lewis North. The JBLM Deuces Wild Triathlon includes two different courses. The sprint distance includes a 500-meter swim in American Lake, a 14-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run. The Olympic distance includes a 1,500-meter swim, a 25-mile bicycle ride and a 10K run. Ruck march teams compete
Sports: Individuals and teams of four can sign up for the JBLM Ruck March Competition 7 a.m., Aug. 23, with the starting and finishing lines at the McChord Field Track on JBLM McChord Field. Cost is $60 per team and $20 per individual wanting to march a 10K route through McChord with 30-pound rucks. Money raised will go to Gold Star Mothers. For more information, call 253-982-5279.
A fun way to learn gun safety
Outdoors: The sixth annual Youth Shotgun Fun Shoot is scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 23, at the JBLM Skeet and Trap Range. The event is free and for ages 8-16. All equipment is provided. Spark before Dark
Fitness: Join in the fun of a large Zumba marathon at Spark before Dark 7-9 p.m., Aug. 23, at Cowan Stadium on JBLM Lewis Main. Event is $10 per person. JBLM hosts Cyclocross
Sports: The 2014 Labor Day Cyclocross Championships and Samurai Noodle Team Competition is Sept. 1, at the Training Area near East Drive just outside JBLM Lewis Main. Entry fees are $25 men/women, beginner race $15 and $5 for juniors. Reduced fees for active duty, reserve, retired and dependents ($15 men/women, $8 beginners and $3 juniors). Races: The second annual McChord Airfield Salmon Run and Bake Sept. 13, at McChord’s Heritage Park includes live local bluegrass music, a salmon bake, 5K and 12K chip timed races and a half-mile fun run for the kids. Run for a Soldier honors service members
Races: Registration is open for the fourth annual Race for a Soldier Marathon 8 a.m., Sept. 28 in Gig Harbor. The event raises money for programs that help service members suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury and includes half marathon and 2-mile courses that begin at the Gig Harbor YMCA.
