Jessica Muschek, library technician in charge of the teen portion of the Summer Reading Program, picks out books she enjoys and will promote during the June 19-Aug. 3 reading event at McChord Library Monday.

Upcoming events

During the week, in addition to children and adults earning prizes for specified hours of reading, there will be activities and special guests will be at the libraries, including:

At Book Patch Library, Thursdays at 4 p.m.:

• June 28, Caricaturist Patrick Ward.

• July 5, Roving Reptiles.

• July 12, Legendary magician Jeff Evans.

• July 19, Jumprope world champion, Rene Bibaud.

• July 26, Paynes Magykes.

• Aug. 2, Comedian Henrick Boothe.

At McChord Field Library, Tuesdays at 1 p.m. for children:

• June 26, Charlie the Noise Guy.

• July 3, Reptile Isle.

• July 10, Let’s Go Camping.

• July 17, Lewis and Clark Adventure.

• July 24, Super Cool Liquid Nitrogen.

• July 31, McChord Rocks.

At McChord Field Library at 3 p.m. for teens:

• June 26, K’Nex Bridges and Vehicles.

• July 3, Tinkercad and 3-D Printing.

• July 10, The Magic of Film and Green Screen Technology.

• July 17, Minute to Win It.

• July 31, Escape the Room.

Because reading is a way to explore most any adventure, culture, genre or geographical location, Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s McChord and Book Patch libraries’ Summer Reading Program provides exciting travel opportunities for youth and adult bibliophiles — without ever leaving the installation.

The JBLM Summer Reading Program, themed “Reading Takes You Everywhere,” is set for June 19 to Aug. 3. Registration begins June 18.

“All kinds of fun stuff is happening for kids and adults this summer (at the McChord Field Library),” said Jessica Muschek, library technician in charge of the teen portion of the Summer Reading Program.

Each year, the installation’s libraries create an interesting and engaging program to keep reading at the forefront of summer activities. Last year, the theme was “Book Bingo.”

Readers can sign up online at jblmmwr.com/libraries and receive a program packet, complete with reader logs that can be turned in for prizes at the library.

Muschek said she’s excited about the teen program at McChord Field Library because of the weekly activities planned, including games such as “Minute to Win It” and “Escape the Room.” Another exciting activity will be the chance to create a travel commercial, utilizing the library’s green screen room and video equipment.

The adult program will involve a reading road trip. Participants will read their way across the United States and visit states across the country through various authors, genres and subjects. Each state visited will be worth a certain number of points, which earn travel tickets for drawings or prizes.

Storytimes for the younger readers at McChord Field Library are at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Book Patch Library’s sessions begin Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
